Day 15 – Thieves Disinfectant Spray
Hand sanitizers and disinfectant sprays are nice and handy to have around (see what I did there), but they can contain some pretty terrible chemicals. This disinfectant spray is toxic free and easy to remake once you run out!
We’ve learned about the toxic chemicals to stay away from. Here’s a reminder of the few chemicals to avoid and their harmful effects:
- Fragrance – hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, carcinogen. Fragrance can pass through the skin and blood. Fragrance can hide on label and be called over 100 different words.
- SLS and SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate) – strips skin of its natural oils causing irritation to skin and eyes. Can also cause damage to lungs. Provides the bubbles in most cleaners.
- Parabens – Parabens can mimic estrogen which can increase breast cell division and growth of tumors. Parabens have been linked to breast cancer.
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – SLES can cause irritation to eyes, skin, and lungs when used for long periods of time. It works as a cheap foaming agent. It can be contaminated by a possible carcinogen, 1,4 Dioxide. In 1990, a study found that 82% of cosmetic products and 85% of dish washing products contained SLES. - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – strips skin of its natural oils causing irritation to skin and eyes. Provides the bubbles in most cleaners.
Thieves disinfectant spray is is a plant-based product with Thieves essential oil, alcohol denat, water, and few other plant-based ingredients. What I love most is that you can remake your spray once you start running low! Here’s how.
I love taking this spray out with me. Especially nowadays, I spray down my grocery cart, table when we eat out (because kids, right), and even on my kiddos hands! This is safe and handy (again with the mom jokes).
